I’m very tuned to the seasons, I change my eating, sleeping, exercising and skin routine habits every season. Summer is the most important season for skin care. If you have delicate skin like mine, sun and wind exposure is a concern.
Gentle wash. Omgreekarma soaps are made with a complete blend of oils (Coconut Oil, Palm Oil, Soybean Oil, Sunflower Oil, Avocado Oil, Shea Butter). In the Summer, retaining moisture and reducing redness and puffiness is key. I use the lavender soap as a face wash, because lavender is calming to the skin. For a body wash, I use Alaffia Body Wash Purely Coconut. Ethically traded virgin coconut oil and antioxidant-rich coffee berries gently cleanse away pollutants and grime. Perfect after a day hiking or at the beach.
Make your own toner. Rosewater is the summer toner. It improves complexion, reduces skin redness, decreases inflammation and acne. I found this easy recipe on Instagram @blackforager. Alexis is an inspiring young woman. I’m truly in awe of her and her work.
Rosewater Recipe “Gather rose petals, in season right now. Place in a pan with water. Place a bowl in the pan. Cover with the lid upside down so you can safely add ice. Boil, the cold lid will force the steam to gather in the bowl.”
I highly recommend making a bunch while in season. Commercial rosewater is usually expensive and not great, often with added ingredients.
Summer Scrubbing should be done sparingly and cautiously. Scrubbing makes your skin more sensitive to sun exposure. Scrub in the evening only and preferably not before a day where you plan to be out in the sun. Never scrub before or after a day at the beach or at the pool. Gently cleanse and moisturise. Keep scrubs to a minimum, and consider adding a few drops of coconut oil and lavender essential oil for moisture and calming properties.
Gentle moisturizer. While you need to moisturise, you don’t want to go all out with a heavy moisturizer that could clog your pores, especially on a windy day. Use Alaffia Face Cream made with Fair Trade Certified virgin coconut oil. It moisturizes to restore firmness and elasticity. Papaya and kpangnan butter nourish your skin, reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. I add a little sunscreen to it. I find sunscreen too heavy for everyday use. I do use more sunscreen on my neck and ears.
